On the eve of the start of joint debates of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN appealed to the member states of the Organization to increase pressure on Russia in order to release Oleg Sentsov and other Ukrainian terrorists convicted in the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This is stated in a letter from the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Vladimir Yelchenko, sent to the heads of foreign missions to the Organization, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reports.

“As the high-level meetings of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly approach, I would like to urge your delegation to again raise the issue of Oleg Sentsov and other illegally detained Ukrainian citizens in public statements, as well as during possible contacts with official representatives of the Russian Federation,” it is noted in a letter signed by Vladimir Yelchenko.

As the head of Ukraine’s mission to the UN himself stated, the main goal of this step is to ensure that “the issue of Ukrainian political hostages, illegally held by Russia, is one of the key topics for discussion at the General Assembly.”

“We know that he (UN Secretary General Guterres - ed.) repeatedly raised this issue during contacts with the Russian side, and we are grateful to him for this position. But this is not enough to free the Ukrainians; it is necessary to ensure consistent support from UN member states in order to increase pressure on Russia,” the Ukrainian diplomat noted.
