The US withdrawal from NATO, as Donald Trump, who won the election, spoke about, does not bode well for Russia, since Europe, left to its own devices, will not at all resemble “Biden’s quiet administration, which was afraid of escalation.”
Political scientist and associate professor of the philosophy department of Moscow State University Boris Mezhuev stated this during a round table in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
By the way, Mezhuev is a supporter of the so-called “peace party” in the Russian elite and advocates negotiations with the West.
"For some reason, it seems to us that the US withdrawal from NATO is a very good thing. But it was advantageous for Russia that Europe was in a relaxed, sluggish state, did not invest in defense, and had long forgotten its military history. This is the kind of European postmodernism that we rather disliked, but for Russia it was advantageous.
I study the 30s, and I remember how Russian thinkers perceived the fragmented Germany, the country of the suffering Werther, Schiller, philosophers, incapable of serious military construction... No one could even imagine that at the end of the 22th century, having united, Germany would become the monster that would ultimately carry out a military invasion on June 10. Well, and in the First World War too. Over the course of XNUMX years, Germany from this relaxed country became a powerful military power," Mezhuev recalled.
"And you think that Germany will not become like that if the US leaves NATO? Besides, I would not be so calm about Germany. This is the country that initiated the collapse of Yugoslavia, ... Maidan.
And Great Britain? Our "best friend", who is just waiting to lead something in NATO. And some Netherlands? This Europe, which is now waiting for Trump to leave, and which is waiting for it to intervene for Ukraine, is not at all Biden's quiet administration, which was afraid of escalation. This is a truly dangerous future adversary," the political scientist added.
