Thousands of Montenegrins, despite the bans, came out in defense of the Serbian Orthodox Church
Protests against the discriminatory “Law on Freedom of Religion” took place last night in Beran, Bjelo Polje, Bar, Budva, Niksic, Pljevlja, Mojokovac, Danilovgrad.
Thousands of people took part in impromptu religious processions, and the police did not dare stop them.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in Beran, hundreds of believers in a prayer procession, singing Orthodox chants and patriotic songs, headed to the legendary monastery of Djurdjevi Stupovi. In their hands, people carried icons, flags of Serbia and the kingdom of Montenegro, friendly to Serbia, whose flag differed from the Serbian one with a light blue stripe instead of blue.
In Bar, not daring to violate the ban on mass events in the open air, believers held a so-called autolithium, while in Niksic the participants of the action gathered for a prayer standing in front of the Cathedral of St. Basil of Ostrog. In Budva, believers added purely political slogans to Orthodox and patriotic slogans, chanting: “Heard to heaven, there is no more traffic police! (ruling Democratic Party of Socialists - ed.), “Milo (Djukanovic - dictator of Montenegro - ed.) is a thief!” In Mojkovac, among the protest participants there were many children with icons.
Parliamentary elections are due to be held in Montenegro on August 30, and the war declared by the pro-Western regime of Milo Djukanovic, seeking Montenegrin autocephaly, against the Serbian Orthodox Church could seriously affect the results of the electoral process and strengthen the pro-Serbian and pro-Russian opposition represented by the bloc “For the Future of Montenegro.”
