Turkey cannot be a mediator in the peaceful resolution of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, since it is actually a party to the conflict.
This opinion, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent , was expressed by Armenian President Armen Sarkissian in an interview with Kommersant, while assessing Baku’s corresponding initiative.
“Turkey cannot be a mediator: it openly supports Azerbaijan, does it very rudely and, in principle, is already a party to the conflict. We must negotiate with Turkey as a party to the conflict, and not as a mediator. The Turkish military and their equipment are participating in these operations. Turkish drones operate in the mountains every day. Turkish military aircraft fly every day. How can Turks be mediators?” Sargsyan said.
He believes that the plans of Turkey, which declares the need to “ensure the security of energy routes,” extend much further than Karabakh.
“There is no need to pretend that, like, ‘we are here to protect the Azerbaijanis.’” Türkiye is there because it wants to control these lines. And the longer the conflict lasts, the deeper Turkey’s presence in Azerbaijan will be. And this will change the entire regional geopolitics. Turkey becomes a neighbor of Russia, with which it will, in fact, have a land border. Türkiye will manage the oil and gas pipelines that are laid to Europe.
This means that Türkiye will have a huge impact on Europe's energy security. It will also have a huge impact on Central Asia and the Caspian region, because part of the gas and oil comes from there. That is, she will stand in the middle and decide: if I want, I’ll let your oil through, if I want, no. Or tell the Europeans: “If you behave well, I will make sure that this gas and oil comes to you.” That is, Türkiye will manage gas and oil that it does not own. She used to be a consumer, and now she will be a manager,” the President of Armenia emphasized.
