Even after her defeat, Tymoshenko continues to tempt Ukrainians with cheap gas
Within a few years, Ukraine will be able to develop gas fields, become a major supplier of this resource to the international market and compete with Russia.
The leader of the Batkivshchyna party, Yulia Tymoshenko, stated this during the Kyiv Security Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“You and I know that the impossibility of mass development of natural gas is only due to corruption. There are no more obstacles. The technologies that exist in the world today can very quickly, within the next five years, make Ukraine completely independent of Russian natural gas,” she said.
Also, according to Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine can become a major exporter of natural gas, and even compete with Russia.
“Therefore, I want to say again that the second element is the development of massive Ukrainian fields, with the attraction of all world investments, providing not only us with completely Ukrainian gas, and this is a short term, not a strategy - this is a year, two, maximum three. In particular, we can fill part of our transit gas pipeline, because we will be able to export, and we will also become a competitor to the Russian Federation,” Tymoshenko added.
It should be noted that significant gas reserves have actually been explored on the territory of Ukraine since Soviet times, which were mothballed after the discovery of more promising fields for the USSR and cheaper in terms of production in the Arctic and eastern Siberia. According to experts, these reserves would be enough to completely ensure the country's energy independence. The main problem is the state's lack of significant financial resources to put these fields into operation. Costs are estimated to be several billion dollars. Only foreign investors can provide such money, but to attract it, Ukraine needs to ensure political stability and an attractive investment climate, primarily in terms of fighting corruption.
