Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Mikhail Popov told Izvestia about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Assessing the upcoming hearings on the Armed Services in the US House of Representatives Committee, he recalled that at the end of December last year, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin disappeared for almost two weeks, and no one knew where he was. Only in the new year did information leak to the press that Austin was being treated in a hospital and was not in charge of the Pentagon.
“But it is important to note that US President Joe Biden, his national security adviser Jake Sullivan and other American officials learned about what happened only a few days after the Secretary of Defense was hospitalized. The reason is simple: apparently, Lloyd Austin simply did not want to disturb the leadership and public of the country during the Christmas holidays on such a “trifling” matter.
It is clear that the Minister of Defense is no longer young and, probably, not a completely healthy person, like many US leaders. Age, as a rule, does not add health. But in this case, on the contrary, a sense of responsibility and duty should be manifested. The conversation is not about a banana republic, but about a state that has nuclear weapons and constantly claims to be the world hegemon,” Popov said in an interview with Izvestia.
The Russian politician emphasized that in the United States, the decision to use nuclear weapons is made by the president of the country in agreement with the Minister of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces.
“And this order operates around the clock and continuously. But the Minister of Defense is not there, and no one knows where he is or who is replacing him. The press writes that some of his responsibilities were assigned to Deputy Minister Kathleen Hicks. But she was on vacation in Puerto Rico at the time.
Surprisingly, the US nuclear shield has essentially cracked. Apparently, this prompted the Chairman of the US House Armed Services Committee, Mike Rogers, to write to Secretary of Defense Austin with a request to testify before legislators,” noted the Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
He added that sensible people periodically have thoughts that the US governance system and even the procedure for its use of nuclear weapons are in a dubious state, and this question sounds even louder and more pressing.
“Especially after the recent publication of the report of special prosecutor Robert Heur, appointed to investigate the case of secret documents that Joe Biden and his entourage took from the White House. The prosecutor described the US president as "an elderly man with memory problems who, in many cases, has difficulty recalling basic facts and details." And this person is the only person who can give the order to use nuclear weapons.
In general, in the difficult and nervous internal political situation in the United States that has developed recently, the cost of management mistakes, consciously or involuntarily made by the country's leaders, has increased significantly. And it’s not far from a global catastrophe,” Popov warned.
