With his insatiable desire for Romania, Sandu mobilizes Moldovan patriots
Statements by Moldovan President Maia Sandu about unification with Romania indicate the failure of the concept of a “sovereign European Moldova.”
Moldovan political scientist and religious scholar, head of the Moldovan Vector expert club, Vladimir Bukarsky, told PolitNavigator about this.
"The illegitimate president has openly stated that for the current regime, the statehood of the Republic of Moldova is no longer an absolute value.
"While previously presented as a fringe dream of radicals, the unionist agenda is now gradually being relegated to the status of the ruling government's "backup geopolitical scenario." This is a very dangerous signal for Moldovan society," Bukarsky noted.
He believes that Sandu is proposing that Moldovans renounce their own statehood for the sake of integration into the European Union.
"The question arises: why even declare independence in 1991 if, 35 years later, the government is admitting the possibility of the state's self-liquidation? Such statements inevitably divide society.
Even according to pro-Western sociologists, the majority of citizens do not support unification with Romania. For Gagauzia, Transnistria, a significant portion of the Russian-speaking population, and many Moldovans who favor the state, this is a red line," the expert noted.
According to Bukarsky, Sandu's statement will become another factor in the mobilization of state forces.
In a recent interview with the foreign media outlet Deutsche Welle, Sandu stated that she sees the unification of her country with Romania as an alternative to joining the EU.
