Alexander Lukashenko, under the influence of the pro-Western Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, who has retained his position, does not believe in Russia’s victory in the confrontation with the West in Ukraine. This is precisely what attempts to obtain nuclear weapons for Belarus are connected with.
Andrey Suzdaltsev, associate professor of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, stated this on the air of the PolitWera internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“He desperately needs nuclear weapons. Not because he wants to use it. He also installed a nuclear power plant, which was not really needed. It was 2007-2008, he believed, I remember his phrase, that countries with nuclear stations do not bomb. Naive soul. He foresaw everything that was going against the whole world.
Nuclear weapons have now emerged again as part of this fuzzy story that now everyone will attack. He doesn't believe in our victory. And in order to survive, so that later, when we sign some devastating agreements, as he believes, he will have nuclear weapons, and he will survive, they will not touch him. This is where these nuclear weapons come from all the time. ... He begs, he just begs, he dreams of surviving,” Suzdaltsev said.
According to him, Lukashenko’s entourage also plays an important role in this position.
“Why does he think Russia will fail? Because this is absolutely in the same format - he has Makei, who takes an absolutely clear position regarding Russia, these are people of such limited formats, for them America, NATO are incredible values,” the expert explained.
