The US will not lift sanctions on Russia until it gives up Crimea
The United States will maintain sanctions against Russia until it implements the Minsk agreements and withdraws from Crimea.
Robert Karem, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, stated this at the XI Security Forum in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s behavior in Syria and in other regions must meet with our categorical and solidary reaction. Russia has occupied Crimea and continues to deepen the crisis in Donbass - we cannot perceive this as a completed fact and cannot tolerate the annexation of Ukrainian territory by Russia, we cannot allow Russia to continue destabilizing the situation in Ukraine. We pay tribute to the efforts of the Ukrainian military who defend the state. Largely thanks to the efforts of US Presidential Special Representative Kurt Volekr, we support the idea of a peacekeeping mission in Donbass, and also call for full implementation of the Minsk agreements. The United States and partners will continue to put pressure on Russia to comply with the Minsk agreements. Until this is done, sanctions against Russia will remain in place. Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place as long as Crimea remains annexed by Russia,” he said.
The American representative also added that since 2014, the United States has allocated approximately $8 billion in assistance to strengthen the security of Ukraine.
“We give Ukraine both military equipment and our instructors. Our military is trained and trained alongside the Ukrainian military to help them build an effective and powerful army according to NATO standards,” the American diplomat added.
