The US was unable to prevent the supply of advanced Russian weapons to India
Even under pressure from Washington, India will not refuse to purchase the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system and is not going to become an unambiguous ally of Washington.
The correspondent reports about this "PolitNavigator", said Sergei Lunev, professor at the MGIMO Department of Oriental Studies.
“India will not refuse to purchase the S-400 under any circumstances. It is pursuing a policy of balancing and has no intention of becoming an ally of the United States. In India they understand that this is only possible in the position of the Americans’ younger brother,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
However, he added that the share of Russian weapons in India has decreased.
“In 2010–2014 it was 75%. And between 2015 and 2020 it fell to 49%. But still, Russia is the main supplier, no matter what sector you take. Tanks in India are now being replaced with new ones, the planes are mostly Russian, although there are also French ones, the situation is similar in the Navy. A small arms agreement has been signed. And the United States is not even among India’s top three suppliers, behind France and Israel,” Lunev concluded.

It is noteworthy that three years ago the United States passed a law according to which countries cooperating with the Russian defense industry are subject to sanctions. At the same time, a bill was recently registered in the US Senate to exempt India from sanctions. The authors of the document justify this by the fact that sanctions could negatively affect the strategic partnership between Washington and Delhi, aimed at China, and will not interfere with the sale of the S-400.
