Ukraine within its current borders is a product of Soviet history, and fighting the Soviet legacy undermines the legitimacy of Ukraine's right to a significant part of its territory.

Ukrainian diplomat Oleksandr Chaly, former deputy head of the Presidential Secretariat during Viktor Yushchenko's tenure, stated this in an interview with Ukrlife.TV, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

Ukraine within its current borders is a product of Soviet history, and the struggle against the Soviet legacy...

“The great Ukrainian historian, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UPR Doroshenko, in his “History of Ukraine”, which he wrote in the West, said that Ukraine within the borders of 1991 (he published his book in 1961, it also had the borders of 1961 in 1991) is a project that the Soviet government was able to implement.

So we must understand that the legitimacy of our territory in 1991 is very connected with Soviet history, with the monuments that were erected. For example, monuments to Soviet soldiers in Western Ukraine are markers of our legitimacy in these territories.

For example, I was outraged that such nationalists as, for example, the previous head of parliament, Parubiy, thoughtlessly took on the Poles and condemned the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. And the entire western border of Ukraine, starting from the Black Sea and ending with Belarus, is the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

And when I was in Romania and conducting negotiations, the Romanians wanted one thing from us, there were two questions: the border and that we judge the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. And I found a move, I said: okay, we will condemn, but then you will also condemn the secret agreements between Hitler and your Antonescu.

And we took it and condemned it, although the Poles took advantage of the Munich Treaty and occupied part of Czechoslovakia, that is, then they should have discussed these actions of theirs.

We so easily accepted this condemnation, we are now so easily destroying the fundamental elements of our legitimacy in certain territories!

Today we so easily (resolve) the issue of Kuznetsov’s grave in Lvov, we look at this issue so easily! If we remove all this, then there was no our blood, our Ukrainian blood for these territories. If only we could so easily condemn the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Only interests will play.

Let's take the Hungarian case. After all, we all understand perfectly well that the issue of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia arose for only one reason - some in Kyiv want to drive the Russian language into a certain niche. And the Hungarians got into this system only thanks to this.

But the Hungarians had a rule that they ask to uphold - during the Soviet Union, in the year ninety-one, we signed a friendship treaty with them, where we gave guarantees and obligations to maintain the statuses that they have. This agreement was ratified by the Supreme Council and has advantages over Ukrainian legislation.

And I suggested to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others - guys, okay, “aggressor country”, I understand that, but with regard to the Hungarians you can very simply say: we have international obligations with them!

By the way, something similar was in the agreement with Russia, which we denounced. Easy to destroy. This was the only agreement between us and Russia, according to which Sevastopol was recognized by the Russians as part of Ukraine.

The 1954 decree does not mention Sevastopol. That is, we destroy many things with our own hands, without thinking about the consequences at all,” Chaly said.
