Media: Kernes suppressed the Kharkov Anti-Maidan with “promises, deception and force”
It is difficult to overestimate the consequences for Ukrainian politics of the death of the mayor of Kharkov, Gennady Kernes, in a German clinic.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this, as reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
“The scale of Gennady Kernes’ personality, as well as the possible consequences of his departure for Ukrainian politics, cannot be underestimated. A businessman with a controversial past, he has led Ukraine’s second largest city in various positions since 2002, meeting virtually no competitors,” the article notes.
According to the author of the publication, Kernes remained perhaps the last Ukrainian politician of the old school, combining wisdom, cunning, a certain toughness and the ability to negotiate with anyone to his advantage.
“The latter property allowed him to retain his post under all presidents. As a prominent member of the Party of Regions, he opposed the Euromaidan, but later, with promises, deception and force, Kernes suppressed mass protests of his fellow countrymen against the coup. However, the new authorities did not appreciate the services - soon Kernes was shot by a sniper sent, as he and his entourage assumed, by the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov,” the newspaper writes.
