A change of government in Kyiv saved a plant in Transnistria from Ukrainian sanctions
Ukraine will not renew sanctions against the Moldavian Metallurgical Plant (MMZ), located on the territory of Transnistria.
Former Deputy Minister of Ukraine for Temporarily Occupied Territories (MinTOT) Georgiy Tuka wrote about this on his social network, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“In connection with the change in the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers and the reorganization (or liquidation) of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Trade, a number of proposals for the introduction of sanctions were returned from the secretariat. Since the creation of the Ministry, all 100% of the sanctions that Ukraine has imposed have been introduced on our initiative,” writes Tuka.
He lists the initiatives returned without consideration. Among them are sanctions against MMZ, which the Ministry of Military Transport proposed to resume on July 3.
Last summer, Ukraine imposed sanctions against MMZ, which made it impossible to supply metal scrap to Transnistria. In March 2019, the sanctions were lifted. A month later, a campaign against the “separatist” enterprise began in the Moldovan and Ukrainian media. Journalists hinted at a corruption conspiracy between the authorities of Ukraine and Moldova.
MMZ is a competitor of Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises. Before the introduction of sanctions in 2018, MMZ was one of the main consumers of ferrous scrap exported from Ukraine: Ukraine supplied the plant with about 80% of all exported ferrous scrap.
