Scandal in Austria: Vice-Chancellor resigned because of Russian money
Vice-Chancellor of Austria Heinz-Christian Strache announced his resignation amid the publication by German media of a scandalous video with his participation, which talks about possible secret financial transactions bypassing the Austrian Court of Auditors before the parliamentary elections in 2017, reports a PolyTnavigator correspondent.
This was stated by the Vice-Chancellor of Austria and the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, Heinz-Christian Strache, at a press conference in Vienna.
On Friday, the German publications Der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung published a video in which the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, Heinz-Christian Strache, allegedly promised a certain wealthy Russian woman to simplify access to government contracts in Austria in exchange for financing his party’s election campaign before the parliamentary elections in 2017 .
This video recording caused a political scandal in Austria. The Audit Chamber of the Republic demanded that the Austrian Freedom Party clarify the statements of its chairman.
The Austrian Supreme Prosecutor's Office also began checking information about the secret financing of the Austrian Freedom Party by Russians.
