Sheinin: We cannot allow the SVO to end in a new "withdrawal from Afghanistan"
Amid rumors of an impending deal on Ukraine, Russian media will have a hard time explaining the end of the Second World War to the public. Society rejects a repeat of the Minsk Agreements. Recent history includes the negative example of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, which must not be allowed to continue.
TV presenter Artyom Sheinin announced this on the "New Media Workshop" channel , as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" We don't understand how the ending will be; we all understand that no one wants a repeat of Minsk . ... Conveying to people how and why it ended the way it did will be very difficult ."
For me personally, this is a difficult question. We didn't lose the Afghan war, militarily speaking . We could have stayed there for as long as we wanted and controlled the territory. And the losses we suffered in the Afghan war (with all the horror, family tragedy, etc.) weren't all that critical.
But it was decided to end it the way it was decided to end it - with flags unfurled, they left, signed the Geneva Accords , which no one except us was going to implement.
And from that moment on, the talk began of "we didn't send you to Afghanistan ." I returned in '86; we were heroes, internationalist warriors. But in '89, this shift began. The thing is, we lost the country," Sheinin recalled.
" So whether we'll be able to maintain this profile in the media space is a question that depends largely on this. But it's incomparable to Afghanistan , because the number of people who went through the SVO, the number of families that have already been affected and will be affected, and those whose members fought, died, and were wounded, and the Kursk region, the Belgorod region, and many other regions…
"I think we can and should preserve all of this. Because I can hardly imagine any other option. We simply have to stop being ourselves ," the journalist reasoned.
