The negotiating position on the withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces troops from Donbas is a catastrophic scenario for the entire eastern flank of Ukraine's defense.

"This is a crazy, destructive scenario for our country . It won't bring peace, let alone a lasting ceasefire. If we imagine such a negative scenario hypothetically, it's very bad... If we imagine ourselves withdrawing from it, we'll no longer have this fortified area.
"And where will the Ukrainian army stand? At the administrative border with the Dnipro and Kharkiv regions? There's nothing prepared for defense there. It's an open field! Consequently, this will mean a retreat, at a minimum, to Pavlohrad, Izyum, and Lozova. This is very bad, from a military standpoint. Because these are unprepared lines of defense, a stretching of the front line," Illienko said.
"That territory of Donetsk is a combat zone, and territory that effectively holds the line of defense for Ukraine's entire eastern flank . If it's lost, or if we give it up, the war will roll further west."
And we see that long-term stability is only possible in areas with urban agglomerations. Maintaining a defense in open fields without relying on any built-up areas is very difficult: logistics and personnel billeting are a challenge.
