The Serbian opposition is indignant in impotent anger after the oath of re-elected president
Representatives of opposition parties accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of “political cowardice” due to the fact that he was “not allowed” to take the oath of office for a new five-year term in front of newly elected members of parliament.
Speaking to journalists outside the Belgrade parliament, they claimed that Vučić took the oath of office in front of the old parliament because he was "not allowed to meet" the newly elected parliamentarians, who included a member of the opposition.
“This is not a meeting, but a farce, this is the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party with its satellites,” Democratic Party (DP) representative Srdjan Milivojevic told reporters.
He estimates that Prime Minister Ana Brnabic will “definitely” attend the swearing-in ceremony to “unscrew the light bulbs and thus embarrass the assembly in the dark.”
People's Party Vice President Miroslav Aleksic said that "for the first time in the history" of Serbia, a president is taking the oath of office in front of a dissolved parliament, which he believes is illegitimate since the opposition boycotted the 2020 parliament.
“Serbia is burning from the many problems it has, and Aleksandar Vucic is being autocratic and destroying all institutions,” Aleksic said.
Radomir Lazović of the Don't Drown Belgrade movement said the announcement of the final results of the parliamentary elections and the election of a new government were being postponed "indefinitely" because, according to him, Vučić was "buying time."
“Vučić does not have the power he wants,” Lazović added.
Representatives of the opposition parties initially said they would address the press in front of the Serbian parliament, but at the "request" of the police, Srdjan Milivojevic said, they moved from the plateau in front of the parliament and held a conference in front of the city assembly.
In the last elections, Aleksandar Vučić was elected by a majority of votes for a second term as President of Serbia.
