Sandu failed to surprise Putin
Maia Sandu, as the elected president of Moldova and at the same time a citizen of Romania, did not make any political statements that were unexpected for Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this today at a major press conference, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Maia Sandu has been elected and I wish her all the best. I wish her success in her work. She did not say anything new as a representative of a certain political force. We have long heard statements from representatives of various Western countries that it is necessary to withdraw our peacekeeping contingent. And Maia Sandu is the president of Moldova, but at the same time a citizen of Romania,” Putin said.
He stated that Russia is not against withdrawing its contingent from Transnistria, but subject to the fulfillment of certain obligations by Moldova.
“In general, we are in favor of withdrawing as soon as the appropriate situation matures, as soon as there is a normal dialogue between Pridnestrovie and the main part of Moldova. As soon as everyone follows the path of reconciliation, we are for it.
Former President Voronin and I were already close to this, but at the last moment representatives of Western countries put pressure on him, and he deviated from previous agreements. The solution to the Transnistrian issue was postponed indefinitely.
I asked my foreign colleagues: “why did you do this?” “It just happened, let’s not go into details.” But sooner or later this problem must be solved,” Putin said.
