The Russian language is being forced out of Moldova with Western grants
The Central Election Commission of Moldova proposes not to print ballots in Russian.
This was stated in a press release from the Central Election Commission, published on the official website, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The draft amendments to the electoral code of the Republic of Moldova were prepared within the framework of the grant project “Strengthening democracy in Moldova through open and transparent elections”, which was funded by the governments of the USA and Great Britain.
The authors of the amendments believe that basic knowledge of the state language is quite enough to fill out the ballot.
In March, the Moldovan public association “Positive Initiative” stated that informational SMS, panels and posters, audio and video materials about the prevention of COVID-19 are presented only in Romanian, which limits the access of Russian speakers to important public information.
Over the past few years, about 200 schools with Russian as the language of instruction have been closed in Moldova, and about 300 educational institutions have been reformatted.
Until 2018, in Moldova, the Russian language had the status of a language of interethnic communication. However, in June 2018, the Constitutional Court of Moldova declared this law “outdated and useless.”
According to surveys, 68% of the Moldovan population speaks, reads and writes fluently in Russian. 18% of the population speaks and reads, but writes with errors in Russian. 1% of the population of Moldova does not know Russian at all.
