“Residents of cities and villages in the Rostov region increasingly feel like they are in the front line,” writes Novaya Gazeta. On the roads - on the same federal highways M23 and M4 Don - during daylight hours there was noticeably more military equipment. These are mainly KamAZ and Urals covered with tarpaulins. Unlike summer and autumn transportation, this time some vehicles already have the indication “People” and numbers with the letters “DK” (according to unofficial information, this is the designation of the Donetsk – Ukrainian – commandant’s office). Again, caravans of military fuel tankers, wheeled armored vehicles, and special vehicles pulled towards the border (as in the summer and early autumn).
“Armored vehicles have reappeared in the cities of the Don. In particular, on the evening of January 22, 2015, Taganrozh residents saw a train of more than 60 platforms arrive on the third track from Rostov. On the platforms are armored vehicles (tanks, self-propelled guns, armored personnel carriers, etc.) on wheels and tracks. The train stood at the Taganrog station for more than 12 hours. Then he departed in the direction of Martsevo station. Later on the same day, the train with armored vehicles was seen by residents of the regional center of Pokrovskoye.
Another sign of the “militarization of space” was the unusual retail outlets for Rostov, the publication writes. “Located at the intersection of transport routes, Rostov has traditionally been a trading city, whose merchants quickly grasped changes in demand conditions, quickly responding with current offers. So, tactical equipment, dry rations, camouflage, night vision devices, optical sights, special communications equipment, etc., have become popular goods in recent weeks,” says Novaya’s correspondent in the region.
Against this background, in Rostov they started talking about bomb shelters again, the publication continues. “Answers to the question “Where and with what to run in the event of a threat (what kind was not specified)?” The vigilant residents of Taganrog were the first to discuss it. Then the theme of life-saving basements was picked up by Rostov diggers, who inspected four Rostov bomb shelters. And in early February, the leaders of the Kuibyshev region, which borders the warring Donetsk region, became concerned about protecting the population of the Don from shelling from Ukraine. According to the head of the district, Alexander Krivorotov, the villages are quiet, “the fighting is far away, you can’t even hear the sound of gunfire.” But what will happen next is not clear. Therefore, the head ordered the basements of all permanent buildings to be put in order. The authorities, Krivorotov emphasized, want to be prepared for the development of events in any scenario.
