Russia is inferior to NATO in terms of weapons and army size, even without taking into account the US and Canada, so it is not worth talking about it planning an attack on the Alliance. Moreover, there is no need for NATO to increase its defense spending and transfer a German tank brigade to Lithuania. The only thing the Alliance needs is to sit down at the negotiating table with Russia and discuss security.
This was stated by the co-chairman of the Federal Peace Council Committee, Lüre Henken, speaking at a hearing in parliament, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“NATO without the US and Canada, only the European NATO countries, have a great advantage over Russia: about two million soldiers, and currently 1,33 million for the Russians, about three times more main battle tanks, armored combat vehicles and artillery, 3 times more attack helicopters, about twice as many combat aircraft, four times as many warships and four times as many submarines.
If Russia decided to attack European NATO countries, if that were the case, it would be a loser.
Russia could only gain the capability to invade Europe if it increased its number of soldiers by more than 4 times, increased its number of battle tanks by 9 times, its number of armored fighting vehicles and artillery systems by 2 times, increased its attack helicopters by more than 2 times, and its combat aircraft by 6 times, then this would have to be built within five to eight years.
This would allow Russia to successfully launch surprise strategic strikes against European NATO countries, mind you, without the participation of the United States.
This scenario is completely unrealistic. This means that fears of a Russian attack on NATO territory are unfounded.
Therefore, the modernization of NATO and the Bundeswehr is pointless, as is the creation of a brigade in Lithuania.
NATO countries would be better off relying on peace talks with Russia and making disarmament proposals that involve the withdrawal of troops on both sides of the border.
"I'm thinking about a settlement on the flanks and strict control over this with each other. These are important elements of a future European peace order that will ensure equal security for all sides ," Henken stated.
