“You go out to Tverskaya, to Okhotny, to Yamskaya, look: most of the signs are in unfriendly languages, not Russian. And this also happens to the very periphery in all regional centers. Let’s ask the Culture Committee and the Local Government Committee to prepare a bill for the autumn session, so that we are patriots not in words, but in deeds,” he said.

The chairman of the parliamentary committee on culture, Elena Yampolskaya, said that she had already developed a corresponding bill and sent it to the Ministry of Education for review.

“There really is no responsibility. Yes, it's prohibited. But we walked along the city streets and counted: 70-80% of all signs are made in Latin. Words are either replaced with English equivalents or simply written in Latin. I believe that this is disrespect for the native language and the native country,” Yampolskaya emphasized.

The idea was supported by speaker Vyacheslav Volodin. He cited the example of Yerevan, which he visited recently.

“Only everything there is in Armenian. They protect their language. There are no inscriptions in the languages of the world,” the speaker noted.

He instructed his deputy Pyotr Tolstoy to influence the ministry so that it would send feedback faster, and the State Duma could consider the bill at the spring session.

“The government has the right to defend any position. Or we will consider without feedback. Most likely, there will be no opponents of this in the room. This applies to signs not only in English. A huge number of signs in other languages of the world. We must protect the language,” Volodin said.
