Russia may leave Syria completely.
Former US Assistant Secretary of Defense, former US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ches Freeman stated this in an interview with former US officer Daniel Davis, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I note that although Russia has been pushed out of Syria (we don’t know if the Russians will be able to keep their naval base in Tartus, which they are currently discussing with the new authorities), they may leave because the Russians in Syria fought this movement and were very close to the government in Damascus.
They may not hold any ground in the country, even though they have been close to Syria for decades," Freeman said.
At the same time, he warns that the Syrian defeat will bring Russia closer to Iran.
"Russia is getting closer and closer to Iran, and they have a common dislike for the United States. The involvement in the war in Ukraine and the pressure that the United States is putting on Iran is very strong. This has strengthened the relationship between Russia and Iran," Freeman said.
