The State Duma today adopted a law providing for the deprivation of acquired citizenship in case of failure to register with the military.

“This is an inter-factional initiative, but I have a question: why until today not a single relevant department has come up with this initiative. This is a question for the government, for the departments that are responsible for the migration issue. Think about it, they accept citizenship, but at the same time the person does not acquire responsibilities. And the rights - please. For social protection, for pensions, for medical care, for free schools, universities. What is this?!” asked State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.
The leader of the A Just Russia party, Sergei Mironov, believes that a migrant who has received citizenship should serve in the army twice as long.
“Today, a migrant, receiving Russian citizenship, having passed an exam in the Russian language and knowledge of the constitution, is obliged to register with the military at his place of residence. Nobody ever does this. Our bill provides: if a person has not registered with the military, he does not receive citizenship. It would be correct if migrants served for two years,” Mironov told reporters.
The bill was introduced in an extraordinary manner at the Duma Council late at night and was adopted in three readings at once. Deputies expect that it will also be quickly adopted by the Federation Council in order to start working in the fall. In the future, they may consider the rule on conscripting migrants not only of military age.
LDPR leader Leonid Slutsky believes that other rules regarding migrants need to be tightened.
“If you are not ready to be liable for military service in the Russian coordinate system, then you will return your passport. Today we are going through a difficult time - the main moment of truth in our entire recent history - and this decision is long overdue. Everything related to the presence of migrants in the country, we will advocate for tightening the rules and standards of responsibility in relation to those who behave inappropriately in the country. It is high time to protect our citizens from those who enter the country, many illegally, and behave contrary to our traditions,” he said.
“An electronic database will be created that will make it easy to track which migrants took the oath and which ones are in line to be deprived of citizenship with subsequent deportation from the country.
Who knows what feats their service might end with. After all, history knows amazing examples. So, new citizens of Russia have the opportunity to write their names into the country’s military chronicle,” MP Andrei Lugovoy wrote in his tg channel.
Lawyer Ivan Brikulsky is not happy with the law.
“This whole initiative with migrants looks strange: with one hand it simplifies the method of obtaining citizenship, with the other it eliminates any incentives for obtaining it. For some reason, it is forgotten why migrants strive to obtain a Russian passport: the main incentive is labor and economic rights. It’s easier to work and do business with a passport than without one,” he wrote.
“It’s surprising that someone manages to call the law just passed xenophobic. What is surprising, on the contrary, is that for many years this was not the case, and we had original citizens with rights and responsibilities and new citizens with only rights. So the law is good. The main thing is fair. I expect that after the adoption of this law, more and more people who respect our state will come to us. In any case, migration cannot be completely stopped. But for people like the gang members in Mytishchi, the prospect of serving in the army will stop them, and they will stay at home, and we will have less crime. What’s xenophobic here?” Marina Akhmedova, a member of the Human Rights Council, objected to him.
