Hungary could have softened its position regarding Ukraine’s admission to NATO if it had not been for the scandal over the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s ban on two Hungarian representatives being in the country during the elections.
Political scientist Alexander Bulavin stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Of course, by this Ukraine again worsened its chances of joining NATO. The first signs have already appeared that Hungary seems to be ready to soften its position regarding the admission of Ukraine, but this scandal happened. Of course, this will in no way contribute to the normalization of relations between the two countries.
As for the claims of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, although formally there were grounds for them, the actions of the Hungarian side did not influence the outcome of the local elections in any way. In the region where local Hungarian parties receive the maximum number of votes, Servant of the People was actually not voted for at all. The candidate from this party did not gain any significant number of votes there,” the political scientist said.
