“Confusion, the united front has been destroyed” – assessment of the mood in Kyiv
The Ukrainian leadership approached the new round of confrontation with Russia not in the best shape - it was confused, partly due to the vague position of the West.
Maxim Mayorov, an expert at the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The expert explained that Russia views the military operation as the last argument.
“The Russian leadership is inclined to achieve its goals through non-military means. Military methods are the last argument. A major offensive in the Kharkov direction is an absolutely undesirable scenario for Russia, which it is afraid of, but does not want to use.
If they can intimidate and force them to the negotiating table, and push their point of view, they will work in this direction. They are not going to attack without working out all the political and diplomatic methods of pressure,” Mayorov said.
He believes that Kyiv needs to raise the stakes in the confrontation with Russia, but due to the ambiguous position of the West, the Ukrainian leadership is at a loss.
“But it is clear that the game is being played to intimidate Ukraine, and we either react or not. In order for us to react, the stakes need to be raised. Because if everything is the same as it was in April, we remember, the situation is aggravated, it will become dull and will cease to be news. Therefore there must be new elements.
Such an element is the situation in Belarus, we have a “Belarusian balcony”, a flank from the north and a mysterious and incomprehensible reaction of the West, primarily the reaction of speakers from the USA, some obscene innuendo to Ukraine. Because of this, people in Ukraine are beginning to feel confused, and there is a feeling that the united front has been destroyed,” Mayorov concluded.
