Putin knew that Yanukovych could not be relied upon
The United States does not take into account Russia's interests in Ukraine. The former head of the Israeli intelligence service Nativ, Yakov Kedmi, stated this on the Rossiya-1 TV channel.

“Who told you that the Americans are your partners? They don't have partners, they have a game. You either obey their rules or you don't. They decide whether to take you into account or not. In Ukraine they don’t take you into account, but in Syria they do. That's why they supplied lethal weapons to Ukraine. They don’t understand what this will lead to,” Kedmi said.
He recalled how former US Vice President Joe Biden recently said in his memoirs that he practically ordered Viktor Yanukovych to flee Ukraine.
“And Yanukovych was bashfully silent about this. This explains why Russia was so wary of Yanukovych. She knew who she was dealing with, that she couldn't rely on him. How could Biden afford to call Yanukovych and give him instructions? And this was not the first call,” Kedmi said.
