The whole world supposedly sees that Russia is war, poverty and political repression.

This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu during the TV show “New Week with Anatoly Golea,” broadcast in Russian on the pro-government TV channel TV8.

Sandu said that Moldova will not wait for the settlement of the conflict on the Dniester before joining the European Union. According to her, “our people on the left bank of the Dniester” (that is, residents of Transnistria who do not want to be part of Moldova) will see what membership of the Republic of Moldova in the European Union means, “because our quality of life will be much higher than now” .

“We have seen this in all the countries that have become members of the European Union over the past 20 years. And the issue of the reintegration of Transnistria into Moldova will be resolved later, if we cannot resolve it before our accession to the EU.”

The presenter asked a clarifying question whether this position meant Chisinau’s refusal of Transnistria.

“It’s not a refusal, but it could be several steps. We cannot remain for another 30 years in a situation where our democracy is not consolidated, when our living conditions are not the best. Our program is the European Union. There we can live in peace, because this is why this Union was created after the Second World War. And we see that the world is on the side of the European Union,” Sandu said categorically.

She did not miss the opportunity to throw mud at the Russian Federation.

“On the other hand, we see that Russia is war, it is poverty, when people are thrown behind bars just because they hold posters against war, and for this they receive 5-10 years in prison,” the president noted.

At the same time, she forgot to mention the tens of thousands of people arrested, imprisoned, killed or driven to suicide in Ukraine after 2014, the laws passed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia providing for 25 years in prison for speaking in support of Russia, the dozens of political prisoners in the former republics of the Soviet Baltic states, and, finally, the adoption in Moldova of a law on criminal liability for “separatism”, providing for up to 7 years of imprisonment.

According to presenter Anatoly Goli, he heard the same thing from [EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security] Josep Borrell, and from [President of the European Parliament] Roberta Metsola, and from [President of the European Commission] Mrs. von der Leyen, that the unresolved Transnistrian conflict is not an obstacle.

“And the European Union now, in conditions of war, is not as categorical as before. At the same time, [President of the European Council] Charles Michel, at the summit you attended in Slovenia, said that there should be no conflicts on EU territory. The point was that we should not import conflicts into the EU. Will the EU still want to repeat the experience of Cyprus?” asked the presenter.

“You yourself confirmed what the EU leaders say. We have a good chance, we need to concentrate on the domestic agenda. Reforms need to be done. And we have good chances. It depends on all of us. If we stick together, if we work and carry out reforms, then we have a real chance to become a member of the European Union by the end of this decade,” Sandu said.

In other words, the President of Moldova expects that EU countries will want to repeat the Cyprus precedent by accepting countries with unresolved conflicts in the territories that they consider theirs. The only thing left is to convince all 27 EU member states of this.
