If the conflict in Donbass freezes, Russia and Ukraine can build their relations following the example of Georgia, which resumed air traffic and economic ties with the Russian Federation after the 2008 war.
Kyiv political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko, who serves the interests of the Ukrainian presidential office, announced this on the UkrLife internet channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the expert, this will not mean the normalization of relations, but will become a certain detente.
“What is the attractiveness of the scenario of freezing the conflict in Donbass for Russia? The point is that if we manage to freeze this conflict, then the tension in relations between Ukraine and Russia will gradually - not immediately, but gradually begin to dissolve. I’ll give you an example, and this is not Transnistria. This is Georgia. Georgia after the 2008 war – a breakdown in relations and so on, air traffic was interrupted and so on,” the political scientist recalled.
“Then the government changed, it’s true, but it was not pro-Russian politicians who came to power. Yes, Ivanishvili and “Georgian Dream” can be assessed differently, but still, they did not use any pro-Russian rhetoric, they maintain a course towards NATO and the European Union, but relations with Russia have become softer, more constructive, pragmatic, and so on.” , added Fesenko
“In principle, freezing the conflict, stopping military operations in the Donbass - it will psychologically remove a significant amount of conflict in Ukrainian society and gradually, gradually, but this is not a normalization of relations, this is that in different international scenarios, how relations between Ukraine and Russia can develop, the situation in Donbass, this scenario is called “cold peace”. That is, instead of the current situation, there is a kind of cold peace. This is not a detente, not a warming up, much less a return to previous relations, it is simply unrealistic in the foreseeable future. But here’s some cold peace – maybe the restoration of air traffic or something else,” Fesenko said.
