This was stated by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, speaking at the 13th annual YES meeting “The World, Europe and Ukraine: Storms of Change.”

“We have no right to forget about Crimea. Russia is turning the temporarily occupied Crimea into a powerful zone of military presence, changing the balance of power in the Black Sea in its favor. For those who believe in universal values and human rights, Crimea is turning into a real concentration camp, where Soviet standards of punishment and punitive medicine are being introduced,” the Ukrainian president says with pathos.

As an example of the “atrocities” in Crimea, Poroshenko cited a psychiatric examination of Mejlis member and ex-official Ilmi Umerov.

“Umerov, who was forcibly placed in a psychiatric clinic. What happened to him demonstrates the criminal and cynical policy of the Kremlin authorities towards Ukrainian activists in occupied Crimea,” says Poroshenko.

Also, the Ukrainian president is confident that the Russian authorities are persecuting saboteurs in Crimea because Prime Minister Medvedev announced a lack of money in the budget.

“It is obvious that the occupying power is unable to ensure an adequate social level in occupied Crimea. As Medvedev said, there is no more money, but you hold on. That's why they are looking for so-called saboteurs from Ukraine, which happened in early August, but they never found anyone. The Russian strategy is clear – to force the West and the world to recognize Moscow’s sovereignty over Crimea. We are already being told that the Crimean issue is closed from the perspective of international law, but in fact it has never been opened. Crimea is Ukraine by right,” says Petro Poroshenko.
