Poroshenko is secretly trying to make peace with Putin

It cannot be ruled out that the President of Ukraine and his team are exploring the possibility of restoring economic relations with the Russian Federation, at least according to the Georgian scenario.

Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute for Policy Analysis and Management, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, commenting on the recent telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, initiated by the Ukrainian side.

“They were allegedly talking about the release of prisoners, Minsk. But they talked for four hours. I don’t know if we can only talk about the release of prisoners for four hours. I highly doubt it and think that the range of issues was much broader. Against the backdrop of Ukraine’s growing isolation from the West, it cannot be ruled out that the president and his team are ventilating the possibility of restoring relations with the Russian Federation at least according to the Georgian scenario, when the economy lives its own life, and politics remains in a mothballed state without further escalation,” the political scientist noted.

According to him, it was the prospects for further economic cooperation that the presidents of the two countries spoke about, “testing each other and checking all sorts of watches,” and the exchange and Minsk became only accompanying rhetoric necessary for the formal justification of such a conversation.

“Moreover, economic relations between Russia and Ukraine are growing. We see a 39,9 increase in trade turnover over the past year, we see businesses that are constantly being caught in these relationships and trying to punish them. That is, business, even the most patriotic one, is trying to live as best it can without curtailing trade, which, of course, pushes the authorities to search for some rational economic compromises, at least according to the Georgian scenario,” Bortnik concluded.
