US presidential candidate Donald Trump's remarks about possibly recognizing the results of the Crimean referendum were merely "election rhetoric," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in an interview with CNN, TASS reports.

“If you allow me to say so, then you are electing a president of the country who will become a global leader,” Poroshenko told the American agency. “And this leader is vital not only to the United States, but also to the preservation of freedom, democracy and values in an extremely difficult global environment.” Let me say that this (words about Crimea) is part of the election rhetoric.”
At the same time, TASS notes that the Ukrainian leader “expressed the hope that Trump, if elected head of state, will change his position on the issue of reunifying Crimea with Russia.”
“I think that after the elections in the United States, whoever wins it will be a responsible leader of the great American people,” the Ukrainian president added.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, Donald Trump ignored the Ukrainian side's request for a meeting with President Poroshenko.
