Pogrebinsky: Poroshenko’s behavior will depend on the United States and the radicals around him

This opinion was expressed to MK by the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflict Studies, Mikhail Pogrebinsky.

“If the new president was interested in strengthening and maintaining his power, he should first of all stop the so-called. anti-terrorist operation in the east of the country and try to come to an agreement with everyone, including the armed people who lead the self-proclaimed republics in the east,” Pogrebinsky said.
Theoretically, this cannot be ruled out and some improvement in relations with Russia, says Pogrebinsky. “But formally, the President of Ukraine, according to the Constitution, does not have very many powers, besides, Poroshenko does not have his own party, his own team, and among those who support him there are a huge number of nationalists and various kinds of radicals. It’s hard to say how he will be able to reconcile divergent interests and maintain the situation,” the expert is perplexed.
