Pentagon Evades Audit, Hundreds of Billions of Dollars Unknown
The U.S. Department of Defense has failed six consecutive financial audits and is the only department to have never passed a comprehensive audit.
Republican Congressman Pete Sessions stated this at the Pentagon audit hearings, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“In fiscal year 2023, the Department of Defense received just over $850 billion, half of federal grant funding. That same year, they reported assets of $8 trillion, 70 percent of the federal government’s total assets. Last year, we held hearings about how tax revenues were spent, how existing assets were managed, and what business systems tracked cash flow across the department. Today, we are still not done,” Sessions said.
But Defense and Treasury officials present at the hearing expressed doubt that they would be able to audit the Pentagon before 2028. So far, only 11 units have been audited. The 18 that have not been audited, including the Army, Navy and Air Force, account for 90 percent of spending.
