PACE: Ukraine is shooting itself in the foot and suffering a diplomatic defeat
The weight and influence of Ukraine in PACE will decrease after the return of the Ukrainian delegation, which swallowed the restoration of Russia’s rights in the organization.
Ukrainian political experts interviewed by the Kyiv online newspaper “Strana” came to this conclusion.
“Kyiv’s demarche in the Assembly resembles shooting itself in the foot. Obviously, it was only a matter of time before Ukraine returned to work in PACE. Such infantile behavior in the style of “You are bad, I’ll leave you” could in no way strengthen Ukraine’s position,” said Andrey Zolotarev, head of the Third Sector information and analytical center.
In turn, the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, Ruslan Bortnik, draws attention to the fact that Ukraine cannot abandon PACE, given the importance of this platform.
“The fact that Ukraine is returning in this form is a defeat for Ukrainian diplomacy. This is a consequence of the ill-considered, rural policy that Petro Poroshenko led for 5 years. Ukraine needs to understand that its weight and influence in PACE will significantly decrease, and the capabilities of the Ukrainian delegation will be much lower if the Assembly is ignored,” Bortnik believes.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukraine decided to end its demarche and return to PACE.
On June 26, PACE adopted a resolution that fully reinstated the Russian delegation, after which the Ukrainian delegation staged a demarche and left the assembly.
After this, Ukraine began threatening PACE with “loss of trust” and a boycott.
