Retired American diplomat predicts new conflicts in the Balkans
Former US Ambassador to Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Bulgaria William Montgomery expressed fears that new wars could break out in the Balkans, since not a single ethnic conflict has been resolved.
The retired diplomat told the HRT television channel about this , reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I think in the '90s, this place [the Balkans] was the main place in the world that our leaders focused on,” Montgomery said. – Today this is not the case, and I do not believe that these countries themselves will be able to solve the problems that concern them. Emotions on all sides are so high that I don’t see a solution.”
The American fears that military conflicts in the Balkans may resume because the EU does not provide enough support to the region.
“We must not forget that Germany and France fought for centuries and only stopped fighting after World War II. This will happen in this region too. However, most importantly, the European Union's help will be needed first because the region cannot recover alone. He needs the full support of the West, the United States of America and the EU,” the former ambassador added.
At the same time, curiously, William Montgomery noted the state of crisis in the United States itself.
“I couldn’t be a diplomat today because I no longer believe that the American way is necessarily the right way and that our democratic system is right for the world,” the diplomat said.
He also added that now, instead of one America, there are two, the country is divided into approximately equal halves, which hinders the adoption of all responsible decisions.
