“We’ll drive it 180 kilometers away”: the end of Russian air supremacy is announced in Kyiv
Ukraine is reaching a new level of effective counteraction to Russian missiles and aircraft.
This was stated by Ukrainian military analyst and head of the New Geopolitics Research Network, Mykhailo Samus, as reported by PolitNavigator correspondent.

He does not agree with a number of Western media assessments about the weakness of Ukrainian air defense.
“Look, if we compare air defense and armed forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the moment and on February 24, 2022, these are completely different things. That is, the Ukrainian air defense system has significantly strengthened. And at that time, Ukrainian air defense grounded Russian aircraft and did not allow air supremacy. That is, if we did not have air defense, Russian aviation would carry out bombing attacks by directly dropping bombs on our cities, like World War II, and we would see it.
If they are now writing in some Western newspaper that we have no air defense, I have a question, why are there no Russian planes over Kiev now? The answer is very simple - we have air defense. And it prevents Russian planes from not only not flying into our territory, but even coming close. That is, they launch missiles very far from the coverage areas of our air defense,” Samus said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
He believes that the appearance of the Patriot air defense system in Ukraine will radically change the situation.
“We are reaching a completely different level of counteraction to both Russian missiles and aircraft. Now we can already say that the Russians are taking a great risk when they go out, for example, in the south, and try to drop, including controlled air bombs, on Ukrainian cities. Very soon, I hope, this will no longer be possible.
Soon, Russian aircraft will not be able to approach within 180 kilometers of the Ukrainian border or the front line. And this will change the situation even more. The European SAMP-T complex will also change the situation, having characteristics like Patriot, but even more mobile and, I think, will fight Russian aviation even more effectively,” the expert notes.
At the same time, he added that Ukraine would like to receive even more modern Western air defense systems.
“A situation will arise when Ukraine closes the sky completely, will not allow aviation to operate, reduce the effectiveness of Russian missile attacks, and this, of course, will help the Ukrainian army in carrying out counter-offensive actions, because when you carry out offensive actions, it is very important that the sky above you is not was under the control of the Russians,” summed up Samus.
