In the context of the victory in the US presidential election of Donald Trump, known for his skeptical views on NATO, the European Union needs to be concerned about its own security.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, announced this at a hearing in the European Parliament, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" Trump's reelection should send a message that we need to strengthen our security. We need to take our destiny into our own hands . We said this in 2016, when Trump was first elected, that we need to take control of our future—we're saying the same thing today. But what has happened in the last seven years? Military spending in Germany was 1,15% of GDP, and now it's risen to 1,3%. This doesn't equate to taking our destiny into our own hands. Let me say something. The European Union is not just an economic union; it's not like NATO protects our security while the EU deals with economic issues.
"The EU must show ambition and develop a common security and defense policy. We need to focus on military defense; we shouldn't simply produce weapons for NATO ; we need a strategic compass. Over the past five years, we have done a lot to ensure that the European Union plays a military role that doesn't contradict NATO membership, but rather complements it," Borrell said.
