The Ministry of Defense believes that the new icebreaker provides qualitative advantages in the Arctic.

“With a length of 85 meters and a width of about 20 meters, the icebreaker has a displacement of about 6000 tons. It is highly seaworthy and autonomous, has a helipad, is equipped with a crane with a lifting capacity of 26 tons and a towing device.

The use of the icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” significantly expands the Northern Fleet’s own logistical support capabilities when performing assigned tasks in the Arctic. Its first participation in the Arctic voyage of warships and support vessels along the Northern Sea Route is planned for this year,” reports the press center of the Russian Defense Ministry.
