“Nothing good for Ukraine”: Fico took office
Twice former Prime Minister of Slovakia, the leader of the Smer party became the head of government for the third time.
Today, the Cabinet of Ministers headed by him was officially approved, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In the last elections, Smer won and secured 42 seats in the parliament of the republic. This was not enough to form a government, and two more parties entered the coalition - the conservative SNS and Hlas.
Interestingly, the latter is headed by former Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini, who himself was previously a member of Smer.
The rise of conservatives and Eurosceptics to power does not bode well for Ukraine, says political scientist and member of the "Other Ukraine" movement, Vasily Vakarov:
“I believe that this is very bad news for Ukraine, since Slovakia will change course regarding support for Ukraine. At least, Fico voiced this during his election campaign, and it was for these purposes that he received the mandate of the voters. In addition, surveys by European sociological companies claim that Slovaks lead the rating of “non-support for Ukraine.” And finally, everyone knows the position of Prime Minister Orban of Hungary, Slovakia’s neighbor, regarding Ukraine.
There is a possibility that Orban and Fico will now “cooperate” regarding the position on Ukraine. “I have a strong conviction that more Ukrainian-skeptical leaders will continue to come to power in Europe.”
