Moskovsky Komsomolets managed to find out the fate of the scandalous ex-mayor of Slavyansk Nelya Shtepa. She is alive, well and lives in a secure, comfortable building under the control of the rebels.
In Slavyansk, opinions about Nela Igorevna are mixed, the newspaper writes: everyone admits that the city under her leadership has become cleaner and more comfortable, but they note her eccentric character.
“She was an Orthodox woman, she went to church, then she joined a sect, then she repented,” says one of the militiamen. “At first I rushed along with everyone else to pull the wheels, shouting: “These are ours, this is Russia that has come!” And the next day she left us and ran to the Artemovsky district to the militants to ask them to start beating us.”
“In principle, Nelya Igorevna suited us as the mayor of the city. She behaved evenly, stealing on the sly,” says the people’s mayor of the city, Vyacheslav Ponomarev. “In order not to disrupt the work of the city economy, we decided to create a territorial community, put our people in key positions, leave the city mayor in the same place, and continue to work.”
Ponomarev was glad when Shtepa came to the barricades and began to provide assistance. “But the next day they replaced her. She behaved inappropriately. I have irrefutable evidence of Nelya Igorevna’s conspiracy with people from the Right Sector. She wanted to launch them into the executive committee. 70 people had to change into civilian clothes and come here. We managed to prevent this operation in time. And Nelya Igorevna, as we say, “got on her skis.” But we have checkpoints everywhere. She had to return to Slavyansk, she hid in different apartments. Then, through a trusted person, I invited her to meet. She weighed everything and decided not to refuse me. I guaranteed that everything would be fine with her,” Ponomarev said.
“To prevent it from being stolen by enemy forces, we decided to protect it,” continues the mayor. – We provided her with the room where she lives. There is a shower, a toilet, and she is provided with food. When she became ill, we even took her to the clinic. OSCE representatives saw her, met with her, and asked questions. She does not hold back and does not “sit with us.” She is under our protection because a criminal case has been opened against her. We do not want her to repeat the fate of those leaders who are now in the pre-trial detention center in Kyiv. This is our man, and we will not give him to anyone.”
