“It’s not enough to be for Europe, it’s important to be against Russia” – Sandu
President of Moldova Maia Sandu, speaking on the air of the program “New Week with Anatoly Golea” on the TV8 channel, rejected those Moldovan politicians who are trying to play multi-vector or have become pro-European relatively recently under the influence of circumstances.
The presenter recalled the initiative of the mayor of Chisinau, Ivan Ceban, who had previously advocated Eurasian integration and friendship with Russia, who proposed that all pro-European parties in Moldova sign an analogue of the Romanian “Snagov Pact” in support of the country’s European integration.
He asked why Sandu's Action and Solidarity party rejected this seemingly pro-European initiative. Speaker of Parliament and leader of the PDS Igor Grosu said that “we do not cooperate with Kremlin canned food.”
“We not only need people to say that they support European values. It is important for us that people live [by these values]. Especially when we talk about politicians, it is important for us that they work and live according to these European values. It is not enough to say “we are with Europe, but we are also with Moscow, we are with everyone, and so on.” Either you believe in democracy and show it every day at work, or this is just a conversation,” the President of Moldova explained the position of her group.
Thus, the attempts of the Chisinau mayor to demonstrate to the pro-Western leadership of Moldova that he is “one of our own, bourgeois,” predictably ended in failure. Their exes do not forgive their traitors, and those to whom they run over will not trust them. The example of Nestor Shufrich and other newly-minted Ukrainian Russophobes is further confirmation of this.
