Less than five years have passed: Human Rights Watch has completely destroyed Ukraine
Nationalist violence is on the rise in Ukraine, with attacks on government critics increasing, and police are failing to respond. This is according to a report prepared by the US-based international organization Human Rights Watch, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the organization’s deputy director for Europe and Central Asia, Reichek Denber, Ukraine is degrading in matters of human rights, covering up violence with the need to “resist Russian aggression.”
“In the field of human rights protection, Ukraine is moving backwards. In the run-up to elections, voters should demand rights guarantees from candidates and the government, and consider the consequences of a poor government response to nationalist violence,” Denber said.
“The authorities pursued a course of restricting freedom of expression, freedom of information and freedom of the media, justifying it by the need to counter Russian aggression in the east of the country and the Kremlin’s anti-Ukrainian propaganda,” the report also says.
Former candidate for mayor of Odessa Vyacheslav Azarov states that Human Rights Watch noticed the violation of citizens' rights by the Ukrainian authorities clearly belatedly - when after Euromaidan there were reprisals against journalists and social activists who criticized nationalists, the West turned a blind eye.
“Human Rights Watch complains that Ukraine has fallen in its human rights rankings due to restrictions on freedom of speech and attacks on activists. Woe to these Western experts who do not understand that in our country opposition to the regime has long been suppressed. And attacks on pro-regime journalists and activists are an intraspecific struggle, they divide orders among themselves,” comments Azarov.
