We are facing a food crisis - Ukrainian economist
Ukraine is facing a severe agrarian crisis, which has already begun, and a shortage of food for its own needs.
Economist and former advisor to the president of the Association of Ukrainian Banks, Oleksiy Kushch, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to the expert, Ukrainian farmers are reducing the amount of acreage due to rising production costs.
“We have a systemic crisis in the agricultural sector, because it is faced with a transport and logistics shock. For many farmers, the cost of logistics and transportation costs now exceeds the cost of selling their agricultural raw materials, so they store their products and do not sell them, because domestic prices are quite low.
Moreover, they plan to significantly reduce the area under cultivation. In one or two years, we may face the fact that we will find ourselves in a situation where a third of the pre-war areas will be sown. In fact, this will already be at the level of an internal food crisis, that is, not only will we not be able to export something, but we will not be able to satisfy our internal needs at all in two or three years if this dynamic continues.”
