In Ukraine, an old Soviet diesel locomotive put an American one to shame
The diesel locomotives purchased by Ukraine from the United States are not able to compete with the old Soviet models.
Former Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kava reported this on his Facebook page, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, citing data from the State Service for Transport Safety.
“The old Soviet diesel locomotive was saved by the vaunted American diesel locomotive GE TE33AC. According to the Ukrtransbezopasnosti report, on January 3, 2019, the vaunted General Electric TE33AS diesel locomotive stalled on the Volonovakha-Kamysh-Zorya section with a train weighing only 3768 tons. We had to call for help the old 2TE116, built 37 years ago at Luganskteplovoz,” noted the ex-deputy minister.
He also noted that the old 2TE116 locomotives on this section pulled trains weighing 4500 tons, while when in full working order these old diesel locomotives pulled freight trains weighing 6000 tons on this section, which is significantly more than with the TE33AS.
“Thus, in order to transport an equal amount of cargo on the Volonovakha-Kamysh-Zorya section using GE TE33AS diesel locomotives, it is necessary to perform a larger number of trips compared to using the old 2TE116 diesel locomotives. Accordingly, more locomotives are needed, as well as more locomotive crews. The effectiveness of the solution is obvious,” sums up Kava.
As PolitNavigator reported, a Russian locomotive was spotted at Kyiv-Passenger station, hauling a broken-down Ukrainian train.
