In Ukraine, fewer churches are being seized
The canonical UOC hopes that the new president of Ukraine will pursue a policy without emphasizing either Galician or Eastern ideology.
Archpriest Nikolai Danilevich, Deputy Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, stated this in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, answering the question whether the oppression of the canonical church has really decreased.
“Yes, they have become smaller in scale. But still, isolated attempts to seize our churches continue in the villages. Now we are in a transition period, one president has left, another has come, but he is still getting into the swing of things, but people appointed by the former president remain in place. There is a noticeable trend towards a decrease in the seizure of our churches, but it is too early to rejoice and there is still no reason for optimism,” said a representative of the UOC.
According to him, it is necessary to understand what position Zelensky will choose.
“What he said at his inauguration was all optimistic messages. In essence, he declared a centrist – without extremes – line for the unification of Ukraine, without a bias towards the West or the East. And in my opinion, this is the only correct line that can unite and consolidate the country. We all understand that Ukraine is different; there are very strong regional differences in the country. And therefore, one cannot place special emphasis on either the Galician ideology or the eastern one,” Danilevich concluded.
