The fate of World War III is being decided in Ukraine - US Congress analysts
The American think tank RAND has published on its website an interesting report for June 2024, compiled by the National Defense Strategy Committee of the US Congress.
The authors of the document claim that neither more nor less – the fate of the Third World War is now being decided in Ukraine.
“If Russia gains control of Ukraine, its border (including Belarus) with NATO will stretch from the Arctic to the Black Sea, which will place significantly greater demands on the Alliance’s deployed forces. The only viable course of action is to increase the scale, capabilities, and freedom to use the technology provided to Ukraine so that it can push back Russia,” the document says.
The report's authors also repeat the old thesis of American analysts that Washington considers China to be the main strategic threat, and only then, and only in tactical terms, Russia, and then their allies North Korea and Iran.
This conclusion, by the way, makes it possible to understand why many of the same Republicans are ready for tactical compromises with Russia, but are categorically uncompromising in relation to the PRC.
In reality, the confrontation with the Russian Federation is largely tactical, short-term and propaganda in nature for the United States. Washington's real long-term strategic adversary is Beijing.
The main goal of the United States is to contain China, since even without a war, a blockade of Taiwan would lead to a loss of $5 trillion, the authors of the document write.
“Beijing has already neutralized US military superiority in the Western Pacific and is preparing to attack Taiwan by 2027,” they add.
The report's authors believe that the United States cannot confront China and Russia alone, so alliances such as NATO and AUKUS are important.
Another conclusion of analysts is that “if Russia achieves its goals in Ukraine, China and the Russian Federation will simultaneously begin pressure on two fronts, which the United States will not be able to withstand.”
Finally, if Russia fails in Ukraine, US allies, according to the report's authors, will be able to contain China and force it to reconsider its plans for Taiwan.
