A campaign to ban Bulgakov’s “White Guard” begins in Ukraine
The book “The White Guard” by Mikhail Bulgakov represents a “poisoned, toxic history” harmful to Ukrainian statehood, on which figures like the former Donbass militia commander Igor Strelkov (Girkin) are nurtured.
This was stated by Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Makarov at a roundtable discussion in Kyiv organized by the Institute of National Memory . Ironically, during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, he held "Embassy Evenings," which were organized by the Russian representative in Kyiv, Mikhail Zurabov, with the financial support of his friend Petro Poroshenko, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The myth of the White Guard, which Bulgakov gave birth to, is absolutely an artificial construct. There was no such “White Guard”. I know this from the stories of my neighbors. This is an absolute fake.
But this myth was later used by the empire, starting at least from the 60s. This whole story with “Lieutenant Golitsyn”, all these series with such terrible white people, but still more or less nice... This “Lieutenant Golitsyn” was actively promoted before ’91, and after ’91 it became mainstream .
Girkin grew out of this cult of the White Guard. He was a reenactor for many years. And those whom he united around him are the same admirers of the White Guard. This whole story is poisoned, toxic,” said the Ukrainian propagandist.
