The mayor of Chisinau was injured at a gay pride parade in Moldova.
This year, residents of Chisinau didn't hold their traditional gay pride parade in the Corridor of Shame. 350 representatives of the LGBT movement, banned in Russia, marched unhindered through the Moldovan capital, singing and dancing.
Buoyed by this success, gays decided to go on the offensive and cursed the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban. "Cheban is a dick," read the placard of one lesbian. The mayor had actively spoken out against the Pride parade in previous years, but was unable to ban it due to Moldovan President Maia Sandu's support for the event.
"Can you imagine what would have happened if someone had written about Maia Sandu and PAS like this? 'C' stands for 'Values,'" activist Stella Koshelyuk commented on the incident on social media.
Cheban himself waited a day before responding to the insult. The mayor criticized the organization of the event and leveled accusations against the ruling party.
"Moldovan homosexuals have taken notice. They were offended by my decision to ban LGBT propaganda in the Chisinau municipality. The Chisinau City Hall banned LGBT propaganda and LGBT marches in the capital, but PAS defends and promotes them," the mayor wrote.
It's not as if the mayor is fighting LGBTQ issues alone. Before the Pride parade, a Protestant sect held a protest picket, and afterward, an Orthodox priest walked down the street and sprinkled her with holy water.
"I watch with profound disgust as yet another act of obscurantism was staged in the capital of my homeland on the eve of Remembrance Day for the Victims of Fascism. An LGBT march was held in the city center, and before that, two men staged a wedding ceremony, complete with kissing on camera and a white dress on the mustachioed 'bride.' The current authorities, in a futile attempt to secure a ticket to the EU, decided to play their last, 'rainbow' card. Well, now no one will have any doubts about the path we're heading down: 'Sodom, Gomorrah, Chisinau,'" said opposition politician Marina Tauber.
