“The Ukrainians and I are practically relatives.” An American proposed making Ukraine the 51st US state
A Washington Post reader suggested annexing Ukraine to America. In his opinion, both peoples will benefit from this. Ukrainians will be happy to become part of the United States, and Americans will have a resort in Europe and military bases near Russia.

This is stated in an ironic letter published in The Washington Post by an American named Ray from the city of Charlottesville.
In a letter entitled “An easy way out of the Ukrainian crisis,” the author calls on America not to impose economic sanctions on Russia, but to make Ukraine the 51st US state.
In his opinion, Ukrainians and Americans have much in common: they both hate and fear Russia. "Besides, there are a lot of Ukrainians in Ukraine—and a lot of Ukrainian Americans in the US. We're practically family ," the letter's author writes.
Ray is confident that if this opportunity were offered to the Ukrainians, they would certainly jump at the chance. After all, the NSA would monitor their every move, they would be able to gorge themselves on Thanksgiving, and nuclear weapons would once again be deployed on their soil. America, meanwhile, would get a resort in Europe and establish military bases right next to Russia, the author continues.
If the Russian president tries to annex another neighboring country, the United States only needs to ask the population if they want to become Americans, the author concludes.
